The KE-42TS2's widescreen design is "picture perfect" for DVD movies and HDTV programs (to receive HDTV broadcasts, you must connect an HDTV tuner). Non-HD signals get a big boost in quality from Sony's latest video upconversion circuitry. As a final step, Sony's Digital Pixel Generator System "scales" (converts) signals from all of your video sources so that they precisely match the panel's 1024 x 1024-pixel resolution for the best possible picture at all times. The exception is when you feed the TV a 1080i signal from an HDTV tuner. Because 1080i is so close to the panel's native 1024i resolution, 1080i programs are displayed without any vertical scaling, you see 1024 out of the 1080 lines. The few lines of information at the top and bottom of the image that are discarded are insignificant (naturally the image still completely fills the screen). But the clarity and detail gained from cutting out one conversion step is very significant.

This TV offers Sony's TruSurround Sound SR 3D Audio processing, which creates the effect of surround sound using only the two built-in speakers. This technology eliminates the need to sit in the "sweet spot" where the audio sounds best, ensuring that any seat in the house is a good one. It also features reverse 3:2 pulldown, which reassembles the frame sequence of your original film-based content from DVDs to more accurately reproduce the original 24-frame-per-second material.
